Considering a Career Change
What are some of the things that I should take into account?
Making a career change can be both an anxious and exciting time. There are many reasons for a person to consider a career change. He or she either wants to secure a source of income, move up the ladder, avoid competition and job frustration or become happier and more satisfied. As such, you need to consider such things as: your current financial situation; the impact the change will have on your family and lifestyle; the impact on any benefits that you are receiving; and the new work knowledge and familiarization with new situations that will result. Gather as much information as you can and be realistic in your assessment.
Moreover, one aspect of deciding to change a career path is professional networking. In today’s job market, there is a lot of competition and not enough roles to create full employment, therefore you must use all the resources in your power to get the job you are looking for. Networking has proven to be an important factor in getting roles. Recruiters are companies that look at referral candidates prior to standard applicants. Networking can be done through your current connections and friends, on LinkedIn and at various networking events throughout your location. There are other ways to also break into a community. The most common way to break into a community is using things you are interested in and finding others with the same ideals. This can range from Sporting events and activities, faith and cultural oriented places, and more. Finding commonalities within society will put you in a position to succeed and will better enable you to network.
How do I know if it is time for a career change?
This will differ from person to person but generally if you’re tired all the time, don’t want to get out of bed and go to work, are unmotivated at work and all types of little things bother you, you are ready to consider a career change.
How do I select my new career?
You need to assess what is lacking in your current situation, what skills you have to offer and where your interests lie. You should then explore various careers to see how they compare in addressing those things which you found dissatisfying in your current career and how they would match your skills set and interests. There are a number of sites that address skills inventories and research various careers.
How do I develop a career transition plan?
Change brings many emotions and, in order to do it in the best way possible, it is necessary to develop a plan. This career transition plan should take into consideration your financial, mental and emotional needs. Set clear goals, take good care of yourself and plan your steps carefully. Your plan should include a realistic assessment of the shortcomings of your current position, what you want from a new career, what skills and interests you have to offer, what skills you need to obtain, what the prospects are in your new field of interest and the steps you will take to seek that position.
